Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the ability to question specific rulings made by the official, following the practice currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
