RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of access tunnels leading to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," he commented. "They were part of thousands of UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
